Five Ways Your Online Privacy Is At Risk and How To Protect Yourself

Here are a few ways your online activities can be watched—and here are some steps you can take to maintain your privacy.

Websites collect personal information. Some websites will ask you to register, and others place small files called “cookies” on your hard drive when you visit. These are tiny files that record personal information and share it with advertisers. Use a dummy email address and set your computer to be selective about the cookies it accepts. Delete the cookies on your computer regularly.

Your writing is saved. When you post anything online, never post personal information. Use a pseudonym and avoid posting anything you wouldn’t want everyone you know to see.

Watch for misleading emails. Never send personal information to a company over email and don’t click on links in spam.

Employers and recruiters search for your name. It’s not unusual for employers to fire workers because of blogs, MySpace and Facebook profiles.

You download spyware by mistake. Spyware is software that tracks every move you make and sends information about you to a third party. Spyware may be bundled with other software you download—or it might download automatically when you visit a certain site. Some spyware programs come packaged as anti-spyware programs.

Your privacy is at risk whenever you log on to the Internet—but you can take steps to protect it. Follow these steps, and your online browsing will be safer and more private.
